Fort Myers
The city of Fort Myers, Florida was first settled by a Cuban man named Manuel Gonzalez, sometime in the 19th century. Today, it is a bustling city with a population of about 550,000 people. It is also the home of the tallest building in all of Southwest Florida, called High Point Place. High Point Place is an ambitious project consisting of high quality living areas, condominiums, and commercial ventures such as hotels and restaurants. One of the most interesting things in Fort Myers is the Edison-Ford Estates. This sprawling area of land and old mansion style houses were the homes of both Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, and are rich with history. These were the winter homes for both legends, and the architecture and artifacts are very interesting to see. In addition, the estates also have a beautiful botanical garden, a laboratory where Edison worked, a wonderful museum, and seasonal exhibits. It is definitely a must-see when visiting Fort Myers. For the children, check out the Imaginarium museum. This science museum has tons of great exhibits for kids of all ages, including lots of cool hands on experiments and demonstrations that are both fun and educational. There is also the Southwest Florida Museum of History which is chock full of interesting articles from the beginnings of the area's history. There is a large collection of antique carnival glass, as well as interesting information on the first Native American tribes that had settled in the area. This is a must see for those interested in history and learning about the origins of different places in our country.
If you're planning a visit with a large amount of people, or you're coming to Fort Myers for any kind of convention or meeting, be sure to check out the Harborside Event Center. The Neptune Inn is one of the most popular places for visitors to stay, and is considered an icon by many residents. It is a wonderful family friendly facility, and is currently undergoing renovations and beautification until May of 2007. For a fun night of dining and theater, check out the Broadway Palm Dinner Theater.
